Ideal Medical Practice

What the heck would that look like?

And ideal in whose eyes?
In those of the doctors?
Or the patients?
Or the insurance companies?
Or the pharmaceutical companies?
Or the government?

In our eyes, for us and our patients, an ideal practice is an environment that: 
  • Enhances doctor-patient relationships,
  • Increases face-to-face time between doctors and patients,
  • Provides patients ready access to their doctor when they need it, using technology and innovative billing plans,
  • Produce thoughtful, high quality medical care for patients
  • Does all this in a low overhead environment that reduces physician workloads as well as costs,
  • Helps instill patients with a sense of responsibility for their own health and
  • Cuts wasted dollars from the current system designed by insurance companies.
This is  a nationwide movement of physicians that we are part of at Healing Oceans as we strive to create a patient centered  environment of unfettered access, collaborative, high quality care, and extreme efficiency. The american association of Family Practice has already noticed and had an article on the ideal medical practice.

The model is called IMP - Ideal Medical Practice or Ideal Micro Practice, being developed by primary physicians.

An IMP focuses on optimizing the smallest functional work unit capable of delivering excellent care: the solo doctor, even without any staff.

Below is a chart of the characteristics of an IMP compared to a traditional practice.

    Physicians are able to see fewer patients per day Physicians must generate high numbers of visits per day to cover overhead, even if it means the patient does not get very good care.  
    Practices measure themselves regularly.   Practices have little or no performance data.  
    Practices are proactive in their care of patients with chronic illnesses. Practices are reactive in their care of patients with chronic illnesses.   
    Physicians are satisfied and feel in control.   Physicians feel harried and overbooked.
